Guidance Counselors from the Pangasinan State University in Lingayen and Bayambang, Pangasinan, and the University of Northern Philippines in Vigan City joined the Training for Trainers on the RACE against Suicide at the Forest Crest Nature Hotel and Resort, Nasugbu, Batangas on December 3-4, 2024.
The training was conducted by the Office of Student Development and Service of the Commission on Higher Educationโ€“Central Office in partnership with the UNILAB Foundation, aiming to address the increased incidence of suicide among the youth.
The World Health Organization (2021) identified suicide as a global health problem and the fourth leading cause of death in 15-29-year-olds, with the majority of deaths by suicide (77%) occurring in low- and middle-income countries like the Philippines.
RACE stands for recognize, assess, convince, and entrust. Its training package was authored and developed by Dr. Kenneth Ross Javate and Dr. Shiela Marie Jocson, who also served as the Resource Persons during the event. By disseminating the basic toolkit for addressing suicide among higher education institution guidance counselors, the activity aims to capacitate more professionals in the school setting to address this health concern.
PSUโ€™s representatives, Mr. Randy de Guzman and Ms. April G. Santos, were given a chance to simulate a counseling session with a student identified to have suicidal tendencies. Meanwhile, UNPโ€™s representatives, Mr. Rodel Rosario and Ms. Rowena Mamuad also actively participated in the group simulations portraying the various severities of suicide situations.
Atty. Dessa Estrada, Education Supervisor II of CHED Region 1, also joined the activity.
