CHED ROI staff join Midyear Assembly, GMEF Training-Workshop

Staff from the Commission on Higher Education Regional Office I (CHED ROI) participated in the Midyear Assembly and Gender Mainstreaming Evaluation Framework (GMEF) Training-Workshop and Validation, at SureStay Studio by Best Western Clarkview, Clark City, Pampanga, on June 17 to 19, 2025.
Dr. Christine Nabor-Ferrer, Director IV; Engr. Angelica Q. Dolores, Supervising Education Program Specialist; and Ms. Dianne Joyce B. Montemayor, Administrative Officer IIIโ€”members of the CHED Regional Office I Gender and Development (GAD) Focal Point Systemโ€”represented the office during the said event.
The three-day event brought together GAD focal persons from various CHED regional offices to assess mid-year accomplishments, enhance understanding of GMEF implementation, and validate regional efforts.
Resource persons from the Philippine Commission on Women, GAD Specialists Ms. April L. Mariano and Ms. Mildred L. Corral, led the validation process.
The activity opened with a welcome message from CHED Regional Office III Director IV, Dr. Lora Yusi. This was followed by an inspirational message from Dr. Christine Nabor-Ferrer, Director IV of CHED ROI and CHED GAD Committee Vice-Chair.
The assembly focused on refining GAD strategies, setting performance benchmarks, and reinforcing CHEDโ€™s commitment to gender-responsive governance in higher education.

CHED RO1 conducts 2025 Life Skills Training

Student leaders from Region I HEIs took part in the 2nd Life Skills Enhancement Training of Trainers led by CHED Regional Office 1 and Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB), at the Lenox Hotel, Dagupan City, Pangasinan, on June 24-26, 2025.
The training was conducted in observance of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (IDADAIT), in support of global efforts in promoting actions toward a drug-free world.
Dr. Danilo B. Bose, Chief Education Program Specialist of CHED RO1, welcomed the participants and pointed out the importance of the activity in sustaining drug prevention efforts within HEIs.
DDB Assistant Secretary Maria Victoria V. Sorne graced the event as the Guest of Honor and Speaker, where she emphasized the role of the youth in the campaign against illegal drugsโ€”particularly in raising awareness and leading initiatives within their communities and spheres of influence.
In the training sessions, Ms. Edna A. Villavicencio, Training Specialist III of PETID, DDB, briefed the participants on the overview of the Training Courses and delivered sessions on Communication Skills and Assertion Skills.
Further, Dr. Honey S. Tila, Medical Specialist I and Head of the Public Health Unit of Dagupan City Drug Abuse Treatment and Rehabilitation Center, discussed the Effects of Psychoactive Substances and the Treatment and Rehabilitation Procedures, and Atty. John Elijah B. Baรฑez, Attorney III, Legal Affairs Division, DDB, provided a lecture on the Salient Features of R.A. 9165.
Mr. Amos John C. Refumanta, Training Specialist I, PETID, DDB, energized participants through engaging activities such as Yahoo/Tittle Tattle, Expectation Setting, and Ground Rules, while Ms. Emma R. Pastorfide rendered talks on Secret Friends / Positive Envelopes, Building Self-Esteem, Facilitation Skills, and Processing of Secret Friends / Positive Envelopes, helping participants understand empathy and positive reinforcement,
Finally, Ms. Lalaine F. Divina, Health Education & Promotion Officer III, PETID, DDB, wrapped up the course with interactive modules on Decision-Making Skills and Personal Skills, critical components in resisting peer pressure and making sound life choices.
Dr. Carmela C. Domocmat and Dr. Myrelle Faith D. Mina, CHED RO1 Education Supervisors, facilitated the flow of activities on the training.

13 HEIs secure spots in 17 SDG Categories of Times Higher Education Impact Rankings

Thirteen (13) higher education institutions (HEIs) in Region 1 secured placements in the prestigious Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings 2025, with entries across all 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) has consistently maintained its overall ranking within the 601โ€“800 band since 2023. MMSU is the first state university in the region to be included in THE Impact Rankings in 2022, which started to enter the ranking within the 401-600 band.
Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (DMMMSU) also showed progress, improving its overall standing from the 1501+ bracket in 2024 to the 1001โ€“1500 band in 2025.
SDG 17 โ€“ Partnerships for the Goals, a required SDG among the internationally-ranked HEIs in THE IR, emerged as the most represented goal, with 13 institutions ranked from the region.
The region also recorded 12 R1 HEIs listed in the rankings for SDG 3 โ€“ Good Health and Well-being and SDG 4 โ€“ Quality Education.
Meanwhile, four (4) HEIs in Region 1 earned spots under SDG 9 โ€“ Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, with only 26 HEIs nationwide qualified under this SDG.
Region 1 saw an addition of five (5) new HEIs in the 2025 cycle.
Overall, the region boasts ranked institutions in all 17 SDG categories.

R1 earns two top spots in June 2025 LEA, PSU alumnus ranks first

Architect King Nixon C. Mabanta of Pangasinan State University lead the list of passers in the June 2025 Licensure Examination for Architects, recording an 88.10% passing rate.
Also in the list is Architect Leymar Jake G. Tamani of the University of Pangasinan, garnering an 85.50% passing rate.
The Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) announced that 1,352 out of 2,075 examinees passed the examination.

The region recorded a 62.5% increase in the number of internationally ranked HEIs in the Times Higher Education Impact Ranking 2025, with 13 HEIs qualifying for the overall ranking, compared to last year’s data.
